Some of you may already know who I am (especially the ET staff, unless you haven't been paying attention! *grin*), but I wanted to take a minute out of my time (while I'm waiting for Win 2003 Server to install on my desktop, zzzzzzzzzz....) to introduce myself to the unsuspecting rest of you. Hi, I'm Nadim Haque from Chicago and Berlin (at the same time). Over the past month I've been working in the background, updating ET Web as the new webmaster (and it took only months of searching to find one...), and easing my way into the other KC-enthusiastic fori on the web. Well, I'm 22, a Computer Engineering student on Chicago's not-so-presentable South Side, and a RF/KC enthusiast for two years now. Aside from those quite important traits, I am also a still closeted writer, a mugwump, and the most outspoken supporter of Welsh as a required second language in American high schools (because everybody should be able to pronounce Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch and know what it means). Ooh, just finished up another two percent of the Win2k3Server setup. Gotta go and watch! Well, over the next few months I'll be updating what there is to update (some interviews etc. are still out there, but I should study first). Have a good time and keep reading ET! If you're coming to the KC show in Chicago on Saturday, November 8, e-mail me at nadim@elephant-talk.com; I want to get to know as many ETers as possible! Cheers! Nadim ---------- Nadim S. London-based "nuovo metal" instrumental trio Foe are out on a UK/Irish tour in October. The tour's billed as the Combined Stupidity Tour and - as well as Foe's complex and heavy Crimson/Zappa/Don Caballero math-metal - also features the prog-tinged hardcore rock of American Heritage and the Melvins-meets-pugnacious-Killing Joke sounds of Art of Burning Water. The three bands are doing a split CD in November, hence the tour (and the debut Foe album is out next week on House Of Stairs!) I thought I'd pass on the dates, as follows, for anyone who was interested: October 07 - Stoke-on-Trent - The Talbot Hotel, 112 Church Street October 08 - Cork - The Old Oak, 113 Oliver Plunkett St October 09 - Limerick - High Stool, 39-41 Catherine Street October 10 - Dublin - The Sugar Club, 8 Lower Leeson Street October 12 - Bradford - 1in12 Bar, 21-23 Albion Street October 13 - Leeds - Royal Park Cellars, 39 Queens Road October 14 - Birmingham - Medicine Bar @ Custard Factory October 15 - London - 93 Feet East, 150 Brick Lane October 16 - Colchester - Arts Centre, Church Street If you like KC's more metallic end, you should like Foe. Last time I saw them they'd stepped up a gear. Think the jump in intensity between "The Talking Drum" and "The Great Deceiver". While I'm at it, some of you might be interested in checking out Manchester's epic hard-psychedelic stormers Oceansize (not precisely Crimsonic, but if you liked the similarities between KC and Radiohead on "OK Computer", you should give some serious thought to seeing Oceansize): October 02 - Manchester - Academy 3 October 03 - Swansea - University October 04 - London - Garage October 05 - Oxford - Zodiac October 07 - Portsmouth - Wedgewood Rooms October 08 - Liverpool - Barfly October 09 - Leicester - Charlotte October 10 - Brighton - Gloucester Club October 17 - Buckley - Tivoli Does anyone else know any UK-touring bands which might do something, at least, to fill that Crimson gap? Other than Nought and Guapo? Dann ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Oct 2003 07:59:55 -0500 From: "Alan Atwood" Subject: School Of Rock In the new movie, "School Of Rock," the Jack Black character is teaching the kids the history of rock and has written a diagram on the chalk board. Headings like "British Hard Rock" and "R&B." Being the hardcore Crim fan that I am, I quickly looked for a "Prog Rock" heading and was surprised to see one (since most movies about rock always ignore the genre). To my surprise and delight, there it was, and written under that heading were the following bands: YES, Pink Floyd, Genesis, The Residents and King Crimson. In fact, there are several references to YES, Rush, Hendrix and Pink Floyd. It's nice to see the genre represented - and in a family movie! Strange enough, the movie was quite good. The previews made the movie look awful, which I had decided not to see it since it looked like it was going to be another formula movie where the teacher's a slob and he is emotionally touched by the students - you've seen the type. But then I was reading all these great reviews so I decided to check it out and was really delighted. The movie is good because the writers know the rock genre, unlike so many "rock" movies (example: in "Rock Star," what die-hard metal head would name his band something as cliched "Steel Dragon"?) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Oct 2003 14:08:45 -0600 From: "MALCOLM XERXES" Subject: Re: THE AFFABLE MR. F ANDREI, I am sorry to read that you have such difficulty obtaining legitimate copies of the music of KING CRIMSON & "THIS FRIPP". I thought I was having a difficult time of it because I do not have a credit card! Thank you for your sobering perspective. I do not presume to speak on behalf of "THIS FRIPP". However, my own interpretation of his remark about Russian distribution being "irrelevant" is that so far as his personal royalty payments are concerned in your marketplace, his profits are virtually nil, due to what he & many of his self- appointed minions perceive to be the total dominance of your marketplace, explained to me in an online discussion @ http://www.frakctured.net in the following manner: ********************************************** I can't believe that you are that ignorant, dude. It is hard not to be rude, but I can't believe that there's anyone less informed than you. Everything is always a question. What's the sun? Why is the sky blue? Where did I come from? It is like having a particularly inquisitive three year old on board. Anyway, the Russian mafia is a bit like the mafia. What's the mafia? For those of you not familiar with the mafia, check out "The Godfather" movie/book. Basically, they are an organised crime family specialised in racketeering/gambling/protection/extortion. These crime families have their roots in Italy and many of them emigrated, spreading their crime syndicates, to the US. So hold that idea. A crime family. Still got it? Good - well, the Russian mafia are just like that, but they are based in Russia. What's Russia? Well it is big, big country, much larger than, say, Canada which nestles between Europe and China. The Russian were subject to Communist rule. What's Communist rule? The Communists were a bunch of guys who believe that all wealth should be shared equally. This is a noble thought, but power corrupts so the people at the top of the pile enevitably were corrupted and Communism failed. So when Communism failed in the 1990s, market forces hit the Russians and many former KGB officers turned to crime. What's the KGB? The KGB is a bit like the FBI or CIA. What's the FBI/CIA? They are a bunch of guys that try to fight crime but generally get everything wrong. So the former good guys in the KGB realised that there was more money on the other side of the fence and turned to crime. So now the Russian mafia exists - made of a disperate gang of ex-KGB members, families and general ne'er-do- wells. They specialise in kidnap, extortion, protection, drugs and, would you believe it, counterfeit products such as CDs. What's a counterfeit product? This is something that looks like a genuine product but has been manufactured using inferior quality materials. CDs, perfume, medicine and industrial components are all subject to pirate/counterfeiting. Hopefully this has explained about the Russian mafia and counterfeiting. Of course, you can still buy the fake products, that is your prerogative. Personally, I think you are ill-informed and cheap for doing such a thing. And guess what? That's my prerogative, buddy! ********************************************** Given that this level of propaganda is being disseminated about your country, it is not surprising to me that "THIS FRIPP" would make such a dismissive statement about the Russian marketplace. Johnson first came to my attention as the bassist in my favorite edition of Weather Report ( yes that's right--a lineup without Jaco Pastorious! ). He subsequently made a couple of solo albums of melodic jazz-funk-pop with a bunch of fusion all-stars in the late 70's in which he played bass, stick and even sang some. The stick was such an integral part of these records that he posed with one in the photos for the second album's cover. I haven't heard these albums in years and don't know if they're available on CD, but if you come across one it's worth a listen. There's some good stick stuff in there. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Sep 2003 16:32:06 -0400 From: "Jordan Clifford" Subject: Hot Mail Abuse responses/ my final word I would like to thank Tim for understanding my point of view completley and standing up for me when no one else did(well, maybe a few people did and I thank all them too). I continue to be frustrated, dare I say outraged at the responses I have gotten, and the responses Tim has gotten from Mike Dickson. Let me try and set the record straight here: I DID NOT CHOOSE TO PUBLICLY DENOUNCE ET, I only posted on ET as a final action. And let me add another important fact, that was probably the 4th time I tried to post on ET about this since I got absolutely NO response from ET or anyone I emailed at ET about this. I must have EMAILED anyone I could get a contact address for privately at least 5 times. I did not want to Post this on ET, especially because it had nothing to do with KC. However, I knew that Toby seems to look at every post that goes through, so TOBY was the person I addressed my final published complaints to. Like I said, this was after many other attempts to post respectful and calm questions and concerns about what was going on with my service. Since there is NOWHERE to address such issues, and I got no response from the available email addresses, I had to turn to the newsletter to see if maybe Toby would read my posts which obviously called out to him personally, asking him to please respond to me PRIVATELY about this so I can find out what is going on. When that didn't happen, and the months kept passing I started to get really upset about it. Up until then I had no expectations of this newsletter to act as if I'm paying them. I don't feel that way now either. It did occur to me though, that the only post that showed up on the news letter or that I got any response to was the one was was slightly "abusive". Now that I found out the hard way what the problem is, it is entirely possible that ET didnt get all my posts, but what troubles me is that I recieve all my regular email, including every single other free mailing list I am on. So please tell me how I would know to assume Hotmail was the problem? there was no way for me to know, why do you think i was ASKING? Since you didn't try to contact me personally, you really wouldnt know if that would work or not. Furthermore, take this as you will, I believe that when you choose to publish a free public newsletter to a large number of peolpe all over the world, you assume a certain responsiblity to do your best to help those faithful subscribers with their technical problems regarding your newsletter. If you want to be paid for that, ask for money. If you like putting in your own time to put out a great newsletter, you know that there will be some problems with email. This could have all been avoided if I got the help I wanted when i asked politely... 5 months ago. I was just a fan of your newsletter, so much so that I was anxious to get it every week, and suddenly it stopped coming. That is all I knew of the situation. Just that one day I got it, the next day I didnt, but I continued to recieve all other email including mailing list email. Was I wrong in trying to contact everyone I could find about this? No, but did I get any response? No. Perhaps you never got my emails, who really knows at this point? if that is the case, i never got your newsletter, you never got my emails, I had no way of knowing it was an email problem, and maybe you had no way of tellling me. the months went passed, I grew more and mroe frustrated, as anyone would, and then finally the one nasty post I send gets published and I suddenly get publicly yelled at for having no respect or gratitude. Look at things from both sides. Obviously other people are having trouble with their hotmail regarding this newsletter, perhaps there was a way that you could have addressed that problem on the news letter (if not possible through email) before you randomly and without notice cut all hotmail customers off? Maybe if you knew that I was using hotmail and having this trouble you might have thought to yourself that I got so frustrated because of Hotmail and I had no idea, so now you could finally straighten the problem out. It does not seem mature to me that if you think I am acting rude to act rude right back to me to prove a point. But thats how you wanted to do it, and thats how you did it with Tim as well. Toby came to Mike's defense saying that he and only he sees and approves all the posts that go on ET. So then did you get all my other posts that started out saying something to the affect of : followed by something like : Toby- I dont know if this will get posted for the newsletter because its not KC related but I have not recieved my ET for a month now and Im really curious why. was there some reason my subscription was canceled? let me know, i just want to continue recieving it in email. thanks if you didnt, well then Mike's response might be somewhat justifiable. However, since you see everything that comes as a post to ET Toby, I would have thought you'd intercept some of my earlier posts before it got to the point where I felt I needed to get nasty to get your attention. Perhaps that was the wrong approach. Looks like it worked though. I completely understand and appreciate all the work that goes into this newsletter, really I do. This whole thing was never intended to question that or insult anyone or anything like that. I dont know why Tim could see where I was coming from and neither you (Toby) or Mike could. In fact, you both seem to have taken it very personally. At least Mike did. Maybe I approached it (on the final try) as if you had something to lose if I was no longer reading ET, as if i paid for your service. I dont, I know that. But do I really need to pay you in order to get one question answered, especially if that question is How come I'm not getting ET anymore? Mike tells me I have no right to even think of complaining about a free newsletter, a "GIFT" as he put it. I suppose then I should be thankful for the times it comes, and keep my mouth shut if I start getting it in chinese? I mean, after all it is free. I have teh same amount of money in my pocket whether I get ET in english or chinese, so how could I even consider complaining that I can't read it? Well, what do you have to say to the other customers who also responded to this by saying they also had trouble with hotmail, not knowing it was hotmails problem and not ETs and stopped getting ET. For a while I didnt realize I could read ET through the website, so since I have no right to ask why I stopped getting ET, you have no reason to respond to such an offensive question, and for all I could have known that would be the end of ET for me. I hope you have a better answer for all the other subcribers who are no longer subscribed without an explination, whose only explination comes from this disagreement? Now that I found out what the problem was through your helpful and kind assistance, I can understand that this is hotmails problem, therefor my problem and not ET's. I'll let you know when I get a new email address, until then I'll be more than satisfied reading this wonderful free newsletter from the ET website. Seriously, I appreciate the newsletter, all I wanted from the beginning was simply to be able to read it. Jordan [ I'm sorry that there have been problems. I don't like having dissatisfied ET readers -- but occasionally things go wrong with communications and with email systems. It's true that I read every post that comes to ET, which, as you might imagine, takes some time. Sometimes private queries to me from ETers may slip through the net. I do my best to ensure that this doesn't happen. --Toby] ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Sep 2003 17:32:38 +0200 From: "Jose Soler" Subject: From Spain Hola, espero que alguien de vosotros pueda traducir esto. New Releases Hello fellow King Crimson fans! Infidel?/Castro! (both members of which were obsessed with King Crimson for a few years solid, and occasionally posted to this site) has two new releases to announce. One is a split 12" record with the Friendly Bears, a sneaky math-rock quartet from NYC featuring Candiria's Tim Byrnes on trumpet. Our side features an 11+ minute track amalgamating elements of our last full-length "Case Studies in Bioentropy" with elements of our upcoming full-length "Bioentropic Damage Fractal". The track is full of twists and turns as songs collide in the slicing and splicing. "The track may well be almost 12 minutes in length but this companion piece to Case Studies In Bioentropy packs more ideas into it's discourse than most bands could hope to achieve in a lifetime. This is music for drug addled nightmares and it opens like an opium trip bombarding you with hallucinatory tones and catastrophic rhythms. Drums fragment, lone chords snarl, violins chatter, trumpets parp away and disembodied voices clamour. I find myself actually wanting this to carry on for 45-60 minutes as the symphonic scope of the piece is most certainly up their with the likes of Stockhausen, this is most definitely modern day classical music." -- Live4metal.com "A mishmash of dark ambient soundscapes and chaotic arrangements that sound like Sissy Spacek meets Mr. Bungle. Infidel?/Castro! has certainly made a leap forward with their track on this LP." -- Aversionline.com "Infidel? / Castro! remind me a bit of what it's like to cross mechanical grindcore with the obscure sampling esthetics of Matmos, the results can only be described as totally fucking great." -- BettaWreckonize.com "Loaded with harsh noise, ambience, deconstructed metal parts not all that unlike that of ISIS or doom metal bands, not only does this give people a proper introduction to the band, it also leaves people like me wanting to hear the new full length really bad." -- CalamityProject.com Also, we were asked by Dead Mind Records (a label in Holland specializing in electic and impressive found-sound loop projects) to contribute to their CD "Contre Tous". So, two new 7 minute tracks of ours, actually featuring our vocals and (morbid-humor-oriented) lyrics (unlike usual), lead off the disc, which also features Dead Husbands, Pidpi, and De Fabriek. Tales of cannibal love and suicide mishaps are rendered in a fashion which blends moments of near-pop into the usual chaotic sounds. "The always impressive Infidel?/Castro! start things off with two tracks, the first, a spacious almost Melvins/Harvey Milk-ish sludge, with stretched out guitars and almost-pulled-apart beats, but with Mr. Roboto style vocals and lots of glitched out mayhem and high-end splatter, verging on new wave/electro at moments. The second is a weird and rumbling, claustrophobic soundscape, with chiming guitars and warm waves of sound, again augmented with some strange production glitchery. Pretty cool stuff." -- Aquarius Records (AquariusRecords.org) SOUND CLIPS are available at InfidelCastro.com, the source for news, reviews, interviews, photos, live dates, weirdly shaped sound-waves to look at, and did we mention the sound clips? Prague Rock does exactly what it says on the tin - feeding the overbearing progressive rock behemoths of the 70s into a blender and squeezing out five tracks of remarkable dexterity and scope. It's a loving tribute, though the tracks do take a pop at the self-important pomposity of prog rock, not least through the use of interview recordings to introduce each track. Each cut takes around half-a-dozen snatches of songs by the chosen artist and fuses an homage of Shadow-esque proportions, retaining a respectful degree of heaviosity... In the CD booklet, it says he uses a sample of "Starless and Bible Black" by a pianist called Stan Tracey. I searched through the web, and found that Tracey has an album called "Under Milk Wood" inspired in Dylan Thomas oevre. Has anyone listened to this? Any relationship with KC Song?" The phrase 'Starless and Bible Black' comes from the opening lines of Dylan Thomas' work 'Under MIlk Wood'. "To begin at the beginning: It is Spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible black, the cobble streets silent and the hunched, courters'-and-rabbits' wood limping invisible down to the sloeblack, slow, black, crowblack fishingboat bobbing sea". So far as I know Thomas originated this phrase and so is the source of the KC album title. The piece was originally performed as a BBC radio play on 25th Jan 1954, 3 months after Thomas' death. There have been numerous other versions including a film with Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton. You can buy the book of course but I would suggest you buy a spoken word version with Richard Burton or similar. The Jazz Suite by pianist Stan Tracey came out in 1965 and is generally regarded as one of the best ever recomended uk jazz releases. I do have the album somewhere but can't lay my hands on it but I know that it is excellent. I saw it performed live in the 1970's with the actor Donald Houston as narrator and it was an unforgettable experience. On the subject of reading and literature, Mr. Krausel also mentions one of my favourite singers, Tracy Thorn from Everything But The Girl. Her partner in EBTG, Ben Watt, was taken very ill a few years ago and nearly died. He wrote a fantastic book about his experiences called "Patient". In the book he described the early days of his relationship with Tracy and says 'I never thought I would be lucky enough to have a tall girlfriend'. What a great line. It's that the places KC is going are more or less the same places it went earlier this year! My gosh, haven't the people in DC and LA/San Francisco seen KC enough?!!! I moved to Dallas from DC last year, and haven't been able to see the band at all since then. When I lived in DC, I got to see each and every tour, usually at least two times in DC (and four times elsewhere close by). I don't know what this limited repetitive touring within narrowly defined geographic areas really means for the band. Does the band not think it will garner an adequate number of fans at shows outside these major cities on both coasts? Does the band hate traveling to the southern states? The Double-Trio was far more kind in its selection of touring venues -- the Double-Duo won't even visit the state (Texas) two of its band members are from (or currently inhabit). Nor is there a show within reasonable travel distance, such as Louisiana or Georgia. Very disappointing indeed, and these decisions have repercussions for the band. There is little KC fan activity in Dallas, and it's hard to maintain interest in a fan group when the band won't play here anymore. Whereas, the prevailing view is that the current incarnation of the Double Duo will end after this tour, it's disappointing that so few people will actually get to see this band, and it's difficult to garner excitement about this incarnation in those places where it will not appear. Oh well. Maybe the next line-up will come to Texas. Hopefully, we'll all still be alive at that point. None at all. Stan Tracey did an album (actually, he did it twice with a different group and once with spoken word) of music inspired by Dylan Thomas's "Under Milk Wood". Exellent album, well worth getting, if you can. "Starless and Bible Black" is actually a quote from the poem.
